Laura's school donations
September 2008

Laura Davis and her family have visited Uepi several times over the last few years. Laura decided that she wanted to do something to help some of the children in the area.

"I go to St Bernards Primary School. I had to do a presentation to both Year 3 classes and asked for a gold coin donation to purchase school supplies for one of the local (Marovo) schools" - Laura.

Laura's fantastic efforts provided some much needed equipment for the school and kindy. Thanks very much Laura and the kids in year 3 at St Bernards.

CHUBIKOPI VILLAGE, MAROVO LAGOON
APRIL 2007

The people of Chubikopi were presented with the ultimatum that if they did not provide a Kindergarten building for their community, then the Solomon Islands Education Department would not provide teachers for grades 1,2 and 3. This of course meant that there would be no education available for the village of 300 plus people, for the simple reason that if there is no beginning then there will be no end. The village people were somewhat bewildered by this prospect because they have sucessfully operated a primary school for many years, even through the days of civil unrest in 2000 and 2001, when most Solomon schools were unable to function.

Meetings were held and a deputation arrived at Uepi Island Resort with a plan. If Uepi could provide boats and a letter of request, then some leaf (for the roof) could be collected from an area in the Western Marovo area. If Uepi could provide some equipment for preparing the timber and the nails then some Chubikopi people would do the work. With Uepi Staff Members Peter Mara and Douglas Lego at the head of the action group this plan was successfully employed and the final touches completed with a donated planer from an Uepi guest (many thanks Bob).

Jill Kelly assisted by Uepi associates attended the Kindergarten opening. They presented goods donated by Uepi guests & associates who suppprt the Marovo communities. Books, pencils, crayons, felt pens, exercise books, paper and a wonderful array of soft toys were excitedly accepted.
The Kindergarten is working very well, however the Village has subsequently received a message from the Education Department, that they must now build a Pre-School building. After such a sterling effort to make the Kindergarten, energy levels are a bit low for the new project. With no funds or assistance from the Education Department or the donor nations its a tough ask, but they are already forming a new committee and having meetings. No doubt Uepi will be an integral part of the plan!!

Grateful thanks to our regular donors, Tui and Colleen, Carol and Neil, Imo and Rhonda, Bob, Justin from the good ship ORION and Shirley a regular Orion passenger.
