Solutions pa Marovo - Resource Management Programs
Uepi Island Resort has always been fundamentally pro-active in protecting the outstanding natural environment of Marovo Lagoon, sensibly and responsibly utilising the available natural resources, whilst contributing significantly to the economy and welfare of the local community and the nation.
There are practical, logistical, financial and cultural limitations as to what can or cannot be achieved within very complex operating environments such as Marovo Lagoon and the Solomon Islands. Commercial exploitation of natural resources, in particular fish, timber and more recently minerals have comprehensively exhibited the worst characteristics of economic, environmental and social degradation. Amongst this have been very few good examples of genuine and sustainable development of a resource, be it fishing, timber, agriculture or tourism.
Uepi Island Resort has been responsibly involved in all of these areas with great examples being Jason's initiative with Marovo Lagoon Sustainable Timber which now protects the last remaining sizeable reserve of unlogged natural forest on New Georgia from loggers, protection of the reefs around Uepi Island including several critical fish breeding aggregation sites, the only fully operational sea- kayaking venture in the Solomons which puts tourism dollars into local Eco-Lodges, support for highly successful local poultry and egg farms, assistance to local tribes to ensure that logging mining companies are forced to comply with the laws and regulations and been the major facilitator of carving sales an outstanding example of sustainable value adding of a natural resource . These areas are always by their very nature 'works in progress'.
By association Solutions pa Marovo is in a knowledgeable position to become involved in these sorts of areas should new realisable opportunities present themselves.
